  2. ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 1. About PMGedBrowse ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
  3.  
  4. PMGEDBrowse is designed to ease the viewing of a GEDCOM file in its native 
  5. format. The main window displays basic information about a single individual: 
  6. the person's name, birth and death dates, and the names of his or her parents. 
  7. Preceding each name is the ID of the person. Every individual in a GEDCOM is 
  8. associated with a unique ID. (These IDs are often the same as those assigned by 
  9. the database management system that generated the GEDCOM file.) In the actual 
  10. GEDCOM file, these IDs are bracketed by @s. In the main window, these @s are 
  11. removed for readability. 
  12.  
  13. You can choose the person to be displayed in the main window in several ways: 
  14.  
  15. o Double-clicking with the mouse on the names of the parents 
  16.  
  17. o Double-clicking on a person in the Family list box 
  18.  
  19. o Using the Search menu 
  20.  
  21. Five other windows may be displayed within the main window: 
  22.  
  23. o Family Info - displays the spouses and children of the person in the main 
  24.   window. The 'More Family Info' menu opens the Family Details window. This 
  25.   menu is enabled when a spouse line is selected. 
  26.  
  27. o Family Details - displays the actual GEDCOM FAM record. 
  28.  
  29. o Individual Info - displays the actual GEDCOM INDI record. 
  30.  
  31. o Header Info - displays the partially formatted contents of the HEAD record. 
  32.  
  33. o Record Details - displays the actual GEDCOM record for any record type other 
  34.   than INDI or FAM.

  39. The File menu contains commands that you use to open, GEDCOM files. In 
  40. addition, it also contains the command that you use to exit PMGEDBrowse. The 
  41. following commands appear in the File menu: 
  42.  
  43. New GEDCOM file Opens a GEDCOM file for browsing 
  44.  
  45. Display Header Information Displays some of the information in the HEAD record 
  46.                in the GEDCOM file. 
  47.  
  48. Exit           Quits PMGEDBrowse.

  53. You can open a GEDCOM file that exists on any drive or in any directory by 
  54. using the Open command. To open a file, do the following: 
  55.  
  56. o Select the File menu and choose the Open command. 
  57.  
  58. A dialog box appears, showing you a list of GEDCOM files in the current 
  59. directory. 
  60.  
  61. Note that when you open a file, PMGedBrowse builds an index to it. This may 
  62. take a few moments. This process is done by a background thread, so the system 
  63. is responsive to your input almost immediately, but you cannot do anything with 
  64. PMGedBrowse until it is done. While the index is being built, a dialog box is 
  65. displayed, offering you the opportunity to cancel the operation.

  67. If you cancel the indexing process, the only menu options available will be 
  68. Help, New GEDCOM File and Exit The menus will be re-enabled when a new GEDCOM 
  69. file is selected and the index built.

  74. You can open a window that displays some of the information in the GEDCOM 
  75. Header record, partially formatted. This window opens by default when a new 
  76. GEDCOM file is opened.

  78. To see the entire contents of the Header record, select Other records under the 
  79. Search Menu, and select the HEAD record.

  84. You quit PMGEDBrowse by using the Exit command. To quit PMGEDBrowse, do the

  234. The Individual menu contains commands that you use to move to the Mother or 
  235. Father of the person currently displayed, and to open a window (it is opened by 
  236. default) showing the spouses and children of the current person, and to open a 
  237. window which displays the complet GEDCOM Record of the person.

  239. Father              Changes the Main window to display the Father of the 
  240.                     current person.

  242. Mother              Changes the Main window to display the Mother of the 
  243.                     current person.

  245. Show Family         Displays a List Box with the spouses and children of the

  268. You use this menu item to display the List Box showing the spouses and children 
  269. of the current person. This window is displayed by default, but you can use

  272. This List Box has a Menu Item of its own, More Family Info. When a Spouse line 
  273. is selected, this menu is enabled. Selecting More Family Info opens a new 
  274. window displaying the GEDCOM FAM record relating to this marriage. This window 
  275. remains open until it is closed or until More Family Info is selected again, or 
  276. it's contents changed with the Search By Fanily Menu Item.

  281. You use this menu item to display a window containing the full GEDCOM INDI 
  282. record of the current person. The contents of this window will change as you 
  283. display different people in the GEDCOM. It will always display the information 
  284. about the person being displayed in the Main Window.

  289. This menu allows you to search the GEDCOM file for particular records.

  291. You can find the first and last persons (in alphabetical order) or the person 
  292. before or after the current person. You can also search by the the GEDCOM ID of 
  293. the person (if you know it). Individuals can also be selected from a list of 
  294. everyone in the GEDCOM file. The results of these searches will be displayed in 
  295. the Main, Family Info and Individual Info windows.

  297. You can also search for a particular family by selecting the family ID from a 
  298. list. The results of this search will be displayed in the Family Details 
  299. window.

  301. You can also search for any other GEDCOM record by selecting it from a list.
